Anti-abortion clinics pose as pro-choice advocates

Hi guys! I just got an e-mail over the gender and sexuality listserv. I thought its content would be relevant to our stream so here is the jist: anti-abortion clinics in the US have been posing as "pro-choice" and advertising their counseling services to trick or persuade women into carrying out their pregnancies. I'm posting the e-mail with the links to some articles here, but I would strongly encourage you guys to go on http://prochoice.com/ and see how they portray adoption under the pretenses of being pro-choice. As the termination of "an unborn child's" (they mock the use of "embryo" and "fetus" and call these terms "Orwellian" in nature) life in an environment where it feels "safe" and I believe they used the word "happy". They also call abortion "murder" and use all kinds of gruesome terms to describe it.
I was shocked not at the existance of such groups, but at their posing as "pro-choice" impartialites. Here is the e-mail:

"Here are some articles about Anti Abortion Crisis Centers and also some names of AACC nearby, just so you can see that they are right here around us. Best, Sophie

http://www.fwhc.org/abortion/fake.htm

http://alternet.org/rights/35545/

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/08/AR2006090801967_pf.html "

I think regardless of your stance on the abortion rigthts pro-life pro-choice issue, you will agree with me that women should not be duped or coerced into making decisions they do not want to make.

Links To Check Out

Hello Gender and Sexuality Streamers!

Jon Wetter, one of our awesome stream memebers has stumbled upon some articles of interest for us to check out. I STRONGLY urge you all to read these- as they contain some very warped insight to gay and heterosexual lifestyles and cultures. **Please note, some of the information in these articles may be considered "hurtful" or "stereotypical" and is being posted on this site SOLELY for us to view through an academic lens. Members of NYU, Residential Education, and the Broome Street Residential College faculty, staff, and residents do not necessarily share the ideas and opinions expressed in these articles.** The opinions in these articles serve as just a few of the many reasons why streams like ours and learning environments such as those here in the Broome Street Residential College exist- because as members of these learning communites, we have the intelligence to see, question, challenge, and make some changes!!
I am hoping that maybe we could get together sometime in the near future to have an open discussion about these articles.

Excellent find, Jon! We appreciate it!

Have a great week!

Milk, Cookies, Maxim, and Great Dialogue!

Greetings, Gender and Sexuality Streamers! I wanted to post an official "thank you" for all of you who were able to attend Milk, Cookies, and Maxim. You all had such wonderful and interesting things to say about media, society, race, sexuality, and how the power of advertising perpetuates gender stereotyping and the success of these magazines. You are all so knowledgeable in so many different areas and it was great to see that all come together at this program. It was a wonderful way to kick off the first official program for our stream, and I know it's just a small sample of the awesomeness that is yet to come! Have a great weekend!
